I have looked at a long list of actresses that have played Cathy earnshaw, but I have chosen one of the more recent actresses, charlotte riley to research further. She starred as Cathy in the 2009 ITV mini series 'wuthering heights'. Her husband, Tom Hardy, played Heathcliff. I bought this two part drama on DVD to get a good idea of her portrayal of the character. I actually really liked the way she portrayed cathy, she played her as a very strong willed and headstrong young woman. She definitely was in control of heathcliff's feelings and their relationship, however it was also clear that she couldnt control her own. As much as she tried to convince herself that she loved edgar, her feelings for heathcliff were clear. I love the contrast between the strong willed cathy that wanted to marry edgar, and the weak, pleading cathy that cant help but love heathcliff.
I mentioned in a previous post that the part of the book where heathcliff 'embraces' cathy's body really interested me. I really like the way the producers chose to represent this- they chose to show heathcliff physically digging up her grave. But, as his holds her, it flashes between the way he sees her, which is perfect (as if still alive) and the way anyone else would see her- a rotting skeleton/corpse. this scene helped to inspire my final ideas. I found it really interesting to see a producers/directors take on this section of the book.
